South Slovenian wine tour 6 days
The wine-growing region of Posavje has been overlooked in comparison with two other Slovenian wine-growing regions, until recently. The reproach that this area produces wines of lower quality is a thing of the past. Several years of efforts by winemakers, including good promotional campaigns, brought the well-deserved recognition and popularity to these wines. The Posavje region in south-eastern Slovenia in the direction towards Croatia, where red wine predominates, is divided into several districts, namely as follows: Bizeljsko-Sremič, Dolenjska region and Bela Krajina.

On the way we stop at the Kolpa river to take a walk along the river and relax. Then we enter the old town of Črnomelj through the Medieval gateway, where we can appreciate its strategic position between the bends of the Lahinja River and Dobličica Stream, and discover evidence of the long history of this border region. We visit the Museum of Dolenjska to see the “Situla”. The next stop is at the Otočec Castle, surrounded by the mighty castle walls that date back to ancient 1252 and located in the heart of unspoilt nature at the emerald Krka River. Upon arrival we will walk around the castle and relax and later enjoy lunch in the castle restaurant. Drive to an open-air museum at the Pleterje Charterhouse. The only operating Carthusian monastery is known for its high-quality brandies, wines and bee products, that can be bought in their souvenir shop. Then we visit winery near Krško to try the unique Slovenian wine – “Cviček” and some other red (Modra frankinja) and white wines. Accommodation and overnight stay in Brežice.
Day 4: Brestanica - Sremic - Krsko - Bizeljsko
Hotel 4*breakfast, dinnerBreakfast and drive to Brestanica, where we first visit the basilica of St. Mary of Lourdes. Then we visit house of wine, vines and chocolate to taste their chocolates and wines. They are known for producing a unique chocolate wine. Continue our journey via Sremič, a “vine hill” at 420 m above the see, known for its high-quality wine. We will drive along the vineyards to the town of Krško to visit the Krško Wine Cellar. There we will be shown all about the technology and production of wine, and we will taste some wines in the marvelous old castle wine cellar in a pleasant atmosphere. We will continue our tour to Bizeljsko, the region of vineyards and unique wine cellars that are dug into quartz sand, called “repnice”. These caves maintain the wines’ freshness and bouquet. The wine producers use them for storing and ageing the wine. In this fascinating wine cellar dug into the sand, we will enjoy the taste of local dishes and wine. We finish our day at estate in Stara vas at Bizeljsko, an idyllic settlement among the hills covered in sunny vineyards, located very close to the Croatian border. The monastery, located in the village of Stična (Sitticum), is one of Slovenia’s most important historical monuments. It was built in 1136 by Pilgrim I, the Patriarch of Aquilea, at that time. It soon became one of the major cultural and economic centres of the Slovenian inhabited areas of the time, best known for the so-called Stična Manuscripts (“Stiški rokopisi”), a renowned series of illuminated medieval manuscripts written by the Cistercian monks.
